Experience the Great Barrier Reef
Experience the magical underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.
Enjoy a day cruise to one of the Islands, cruising in comfort on
board a luxury vessel. Or for a totally mind-blowing experience,
you can’t go past snorkelling or diving on the Great Barrier
Reef. You could even take a scenic helicopter flight over the Great
Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is important on a global scale for its natural,
unique beauty and economic values. The Great Barrier Reef was written
into the World Heritage List in 1981 and the Area was given the
highest recognition for its universal value. Outstandingly it is
the largest world Heritage site on earth. This unique tropical marine
ecosystem attracts visitors from all over the globe.
There are plenty of cruise operators and wonderful dive/snorkel
tours from Cairns.
Although the Great Barrier Reef stretches more than 2000 kilometres
offshore from Queensland, it is only at Cape Tribulation, just north
of Port Douglas that the reefs come right to the shore and meets
the tropical rainforests of the Wet Tropics. The Reef has over 1000
islands which are easily accessible from North Queensland and coastal
cities like Cairns and Port Douglas.
The coral islands are very popular tourist attractions. Some even
have varied vegetation including rainforest and are encircled by
the coral reefs.
Off the Cairns coastline are outer edge ribbon reefs which may
be up to 25 kilometres long. This is the outer limits of the continental
shoreline of prehistoric times.
Diving the reef all year round! You don't have to be experienced
to go snorkelling on the reef. Dive crew members will show you how,
and if you can't swim a life jacket will do the trick.
Encounter an immense variety of marine life, the world's largest
variety of corals, spectacular tropical fish, turtles and loads
more.
Visiting Upolu Cay, Green Island, Fitzroy Island, Moore & Arlington,
Ribbon Reefs to mention a few. Night diving is spectacular and well
worth the trip. Some dive operators will take you where no one has
dived before. To remote reefs of the northern Coral Sea and outer
edges of The Great Barrier Reef. From Cairns, Lizard Island and
north to the Torres Straits and Papua New Guinea.
If you have never scuba dived before, then an Introductory Dive
Course is for you. This is a simple introductory lesson given by
a diving Instructor, then a 30 minute or so shallow dive. After
this you are issued with a certificate. Certified diving is for
those who are already licensed to dive.If you do the Open Water
Diving Course this takes a few day then entitles you to dive anywhere
in the world.
